The Rocky Mountain Horse
The Mountain
Horse originated in the Appalachian Mountains more than two hundred years ago. Legend has
it, around the turn of the century a truly unique young stallion appeared in Eastern
Kentucky. The natural characteristics exhibited by this horse carried through to his
descendants. Careful and controlled breeding developed a line of horses that ranged from
14.2H to 16H in size, possessed a gentle temperament, and a smooth, lateral four beat
gait. Due to the smoothness of its gait and natural endurance; long distances can be
covered without the horse or rider becoming fatigued. This factor made the Rocky Mountain
Horse the horse of choice for the rugged foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The horse
also proved to be versatile in its use by farmers for plowing fields and working cattle.
Today the Rocky Mountain Horse is used as a pleasure horse for trail, shows, and endurance
riding. Truly a horse for all seasons, this animal has proven that it is an easy keeper
and a wonderful riding horse.
